4 Simple Ways to Save Water (and Save Money)

Aug 19, 2021

When you consider how much we depend on water for many aspects of everyday life, it’s surprising how much of it we let go to waste. Fortunately, there are a few different ways to save water, that require minimal effort and will save you money in the long run.

Making a few small changes to the way you use water can make a big difference. We all have different ways of living and our day-to-day circumstances are unique to us, but there’s no doubt that everyone is guilty of wasting at least some water on a daily basis. I know I'm guilty of it from time to time.

In this blog, I’ll highlight just 4 simple ways to save water at home, none of which require any drastic life changes, and all of which can even save you a little bit of money in the process. It's literally a win, win situation. Read on to learn more.

1. Turn off Taps When You’re Not Using Them

Sounds simple right, but how many of you have the tap running whilst you're brushing your teeth? Yes, having to turn the tap on and off every time you rinse your toothbrush can be annoying, but is it as annoying as the hefty water bill you'll receive if you don't turn the tap off? I didn’t think so! Getting into the habit of turning the tap off when you walk away from the sink may take a while, but the amount of water you’ll save will be noticeable over time. Give it a go and see the difference it makes.

2. Take Shorter Showers

Take a minute to think about how much time you actually spend washing in the shower. Now, think about the amount of time you spend  singing, dancing and daydreaming about the next holiday adventure you want to go on. How much time do you waste in the shower? Probably quite a bit when you add it all up. Unless you’re one of the very few people out there that are actually able to have “a quick shower”, it’s safe to say that you’re wasting a fair amount of water. So cut those showers short - get in, wash, get out. It's simple but effective.

3. Maintain Your Plumbing

Not only does efficient plumbing give you clean water and the ability to remove waste from your home, but it also ensures that you’re not at risk of leaks or flooding due to poor maintenance. If you are aware of a leak at home and have been putting off getting it fixed, there’s truly no time like the present. Hiring a trustworthy plumber will make sure that the issue is fixed, and you’ll also benefit from additional advice that can help to make your plumbing as efficient as possible. One thing to look out for is an unexpectedly high water bill, especially if it’s not a one-off, as this could mean there’s a leak somewhere wasting all your water. In summary, make sure you are maintaining your plumbing as much as you are with the rest of your home.

4. Stop Flushing So Much

How does the saying go?  If it’s yellow, let it mellow. Sounds disgusting, doesn’t it? But you can actually save a lot of water and money if you only flush the toilet when someone has gone for a number two. Obviously, this might not go down well with every member of the household, but if you’re desperate to save water in any way you can, this is a very simple way to do just that. If you have a big family, the savings will add up considerably, just watch. You can always invest in a low flush toilet, which uses a lot less water to flush. Definitely consider making changes to your flushing habits as well as looking into low flush toilets, again the simplest things could save you so much money.
